Friend Ship at the Dock

Friend Ship leaving the dock for test run.

Hi all,

It’s been awhile since I had time to write anything. We have been very busy at Whistling Man Schooner Co. getting ready for the start of the season. The Friend Ship was launched on May 9th, and we now have her at her dock at the Burlington Water Front next to the Echo Center. It’s been very rainy the past few weeks here in Vermont, so getting time to get the last minute chores done have been trying. But the sails are on, the rigging tunes and we are getting closer to our first opening day under new owner and captain.

Yesterday was our first chance to get the Friend Ship away from the dock under sail. With me being a new captain for the Friend Ship, plus I’m training new crew members, we are just spending time getting to know the boat. We will be down at the dock again today just taking her through the paces. Doing sailing drills to be sure captain and crew are well in tune to handle any situation that could arise while on the water. The great thing about sailing is no matter how often you sail, every time is different. Winds coming from a different direction, different strength, all gives you a new challenge to handle.

So our opening is on May 26th. and we are hoping for great weekend. We are getting more booking coming but still have room on the boat for all three tours. So if you want to join in on the fun and get some sailing in, go to the website and hit the reservation button and book your seat for one of the public two hour sails, or better yet get your friends and family together and plan a private sail. Just give me a call or send me an email and I can help plan a great day on the water for you and your group.

Fair winds,

Capt. Mike Crowley

For the non-boaters, commissioning is the act of putting a ship or boat in service. Here in the Northeast is a rite of spring for sailors. Every spring we must commission our boats or get them ready for the coming sailing season. Well, we are in full swing of commissioning the Friend Ship. The boat has been uncovered, and clean up has begun. There is a lot wood on the boat that needs to be scrapped and varnished. Brass will be polished, the bottom will need to be painted, and sails will be put on. We are scheduled for launch on May 6th, and the way it is looking we should be ready. If the weather we are having this spring is a peek at what is in store for the summer, we should have a great summer of sailing. Bookings are coming in, so check those calenders, and book your cruise with us this summer.  Maybe you will want to get your group of friends together and plan on a private sail with us. We can schedule a 2, 3, 4, or 8 hour private sail for up to 17 of you favorite people. Send us an email or give us a call. It always a fun time on Lake Champlain.

Till next time,

Capt. Mike

Spring Maintenance Started

So even though it was a bit cool today. The sun was shining and it was a good day to get a jump on the spring boat maintenance. So today the winter cover came off. I was able to get a good look what will be needed to be accomplished in the coming weeks. A new coat of bottom paint will be needed as every year. There are a few places where the bright work will need a new coat of varnish. Over  all the boat looks in good shape. Wax for the top side and then it will be ready for it’s splash and sailed over to it’s summer home by the Echo Center at the foot of College St. in Burlington. I hope to see you on the Lake.

Sailing Season Will Soon Be Here

I hope everybody enjoyed the brief preview of summer we had last week. We all knew it was too good to be true and real Vermont seasonal weather would soon be back. We will soon be back in the warm weather and thinking of the coming sailing season. Although to be truthful, sailors are always thinking of the coming sailing season. We will soon be uncovering the Friend Ship and getting her ready for her spring time launch. It’s also time to be planning your cruise on the Friend Ship this summer. Bookings are already coming in so pull out your calendars and pick your date to join us on Lake Champlain. Booking is easy, just go to the reservation page and press the booking button, or send us an email, or give us a call,  if you have any questions or want to book that special private sail with your family and friends.

All the best from,

Capt. Mike

Hello From Capt. Mike

Ahoy from Capt. Mike. We have been very busy here at Whistling Man Schooner Co. I have been working with our WebSite developer to design and get our new website up and running. It starting out being a very exciting spring getting ready for the coming season. For those who do not know. My wife and I just purchased the Whistling Man Schooner Co. from Capt. Glen. This is a new venture for us being a business owner. I have spent that last 32 years at a IT specialist. Now it’s time to be a sailor full time. So even though the Whistling Man Schooner Co. has been in business for over eight years, this is just like a new start up for us. So I will be reporting on how things are going as we move into spring and closer to our opening day. So come back often.

I hope to see you on the Lake…

Capt. Mike Crowley
